Volunteer
Programme!
Why volunteer?
For years Gary has given local children the opportunity to take
up a sport that they otherwise would never be able to afford to
do. By giving them this chance he is not only keeping them off
the streets and out of trouble, he is also teaching them
valuable life skills such as confidence and responsibility. As a
volunteer you will be supporting Gary on his quest to improve
the lives of children from disadvantaged backgrounds by
instructing surf lessons and offering encouragement and support.
As an added bonus, you’ll learn to surf in one of the greatest
learning spots in the world.
Where the project is based?
Gary’s Surf School, established in 1989, is the oldest surf
school in South Africa. It is located on the Muizenberg
beachfront in Cape Town. Muizenberg Beach, with its gentle wave
and sand bottom, is the ideal place for the beginner surfer to
safely develop his/her surfing potential.
Are you on the program?
Gary is looking for passionate and industrious
individuals who are keen make a difference whilst having fun. No
surfing experience is needed as long as you are willing to learn
as you are sure to be bitten by the surfing bug. It really is
addictive!
What is expected of me?
Your daily duties will include:
-
Instructing surf lessons to locals and
tourists, as well as the local children participating in the
project once your own training is complete.
-
Developing and working on programs to assist
disadvantaged children
-
Interacting with the Surf School children,
encouraging them to be the best that they can be.
-
Working in the Surf shop hiring out boards
and wetsuits
-
Most importantly having fun improving your
own surfing ability!
Don’t panic, you will have a minimum of two days off a week to
go and explore Cape Town and the surrounding area. The list of
exciting things to do is endless!
Where will I stay?
Accommodation is provided by the Surf School.
You’ll be living in a house near the beach, a few minutes walk
from the school. You’ll be staying with other volunteers who are
sure to make you feel welcome.
How much will it cost me?
It depends on how long you want to stay. Gary recommends a minimum of 6 weeks for you to benefit from the surfing time and for you to make a real contribution to the school.

How much extra cash will I need?
There is a lot to do in Cape Town therefore
you will need cash to experience all the wonderful and
exciting tours on offer. Gary offers surf trips to awesome
surf spots such as Jeffrey’s Bay, which are great value for
money! Other than that you obviously need enough money to
feed yourself and keep in contact with family and friends.
Travel insurance must be provided by the volunteer.
No insurance will be offered under the project.
What is there to do in the area?
Muizenberg is a relaxed beach town. The
beach, apart from offering great surf, is a prime spot to
relax and soak up some rays. Swimming is also enjoyable
during the summer as the water is warm in the Indian Ocean.
Kalk Bay, a quaint artist’s town and tourist hotspot, is a mere
15-20 minute walk or two train-stops away. There are plenty of
small shops and over a dozen bars and restaurants to choose
from.
Cape Town offers numerous cultural, sporting, and tourist
activities, and the train is an easy and affordable way to
access them. Renting a car is also relatively inexpensive and
the volunteers sometimes split the use of, as well as the cost
of, a rental car. The scenery throughout Cape Town is
breathtaking. For those of you who enjoy adventure and sport,
the mountain climbs and scenic views will blow you away.

Testimonials
* The 3 months that I spent in South Africa
working with Gary opened my eyes to a completely different way
of life. It was fantastic to help people less fortunate than
myself and it really made me learn to appreciate the things I
used to take for granted. The volunteer project really is what
you make of it and if you really want to make a difference then
you can. I would recommend it to anybody with a love of the
ocean, life and a desire to see the world and make a difference
at the same time.
Rachel Collier, England
*For me it was the best way to learn how to surf
and get in touch with the surfing lifestyle AND have the time of
your life.
Bas
Dencher, Holland
*Had loads of time to surf and really loved doing
lessons - both tourists and the kids from the townships! Just
being at the beach for 6 weeks was perfect. The fact that I
could be vaguely helpful was an added bonus. I think I even
found myself on a Sky News documentary!
Gemma Nicholson, UK
*To see the smile on the kid’s faces when they
catch their first wave is priceless!! I enjoyed every minute,
it’s definitely worth it!
