WHY WINTER SURFING IN MUIZENBERG IS SERIOUSLY UNDERRATED

When the South Easter drops and the northerly kicks in — that's when Muizenberg magic happens.

The Secret Cape Town Surfers Know

Ask any local and they'll tell you: winter in Muizenberg is underrated. While tourists pack up and head home once the temperature dips, savvy surfers know this is when the real sessions happen.

Gary Kleynhans — who's been surfing this break since 1976 — puts it simply: "I never understood why beginners haven't realised that when it's raining the wind should be blowing from the north and that means offshore winds at Muizies."

Offshore Winds in Winter

The notorious South Easter that ruins summer sessions? Gone by April. In its place, you get northerly winds — which blow offshore at Muizenberg, cleaning up the waves and making conditions far more favourable for learning.

Add consistent winter swells rolling in from the Southern Ocean and you have arguably the best wave conditions of the year.

You're Going to Get Wet Anyway

The most common objection to winter surfing is the cold. Fair enough. But here's the thing: you're in a wetsuit. A good 4/3mm wetsuit keeps you comfortable in Muizenberg's False Bay water, which sits around 14–16°C in winter. It's brisk, but perfectly surfable.

And as Gary says — "you're going to get wet anyway."

Better Waves, Fewer People

Winter crowds at Muizenberg are noticeably thinner. The wave quality is better. The sessions are longer. If you've been putting off learning to surf because summer Muizenberg gets busy — winter is your answer.
