5 DEAD SHARKS ON BETTY'S BAY BEACH

Five sharks found dead on Betty's Bay beach — an unusual event that raised questions about what's happening in False Bay's waters.

Five sharks were found dead on Betty's Bay beach in what marine experts described as an unusual event for the False Bay coastline.

The sharks, which were found over a short period, appeared to have their livers removed — a signature pattern linked to orca predation. Orcas are known to hunt sharks and extract the nutrient-rich liver, leaving the rest of the carcass behind.

False Bay has seen a significant decline in great white shark sightings in recent years, with orca activity believed to be a contributing factor. This has had a knock-on effect on the shark spotting program at Muizenberg and other Cape Peninsula beaches.

While this may sound alarming, the surf at Muizenberg remains safe with our shark spotters on duty during all surfing hours. The flags and alert system remain in place and operational at all times.
