SURFERS CORNER TO BE RE-ZONED

Plans are afoot to rezone Surfer's Corner in Muizenberg — here's what it could mean for the local surf community and businesses along the beachfront.

Surfers Corner, the iconic beachfront strip in Muizenberg that has long been the heart of Cape Town's surf culture, is facing potential rezoning that could significantly change the character of the area.

The proposed changes have drawn mixed reactions from the local surf community. On one hand, development could bring improved facilities and increased tourism. On the other, many long-time locals worry about the commercialisation of a space that has always felt authentic and community-driven.

The colourful Victorian bathing boxes that line the beach are a protected heritage feature, but surrounding land use designations are under review by the City of Cape Town.

Gary's Surf School has been part of Surfers Corner since 1989 and will continue to operate regardless of rezoning outcomes. We'll keep our community updated as more information becomes available.
