A juvenile whale shark was found washed ashore on Kommetjie beach on the Cape Peninsula, drawing crowds of curious onlookers and marine biologists to the scene.
Whale sharks are the largest fish in the ocean and are generally found in warm, tropical waters. Sightings off the South African coast are rare, making this an unusual and poignant event for the local community. The animal was unfortunately already deceased when discovered.
Marine biologists attended the scene to gather data on the specimen. Despite their enormous size as adults, juvenile whale sharks can still be significantly large — a reminder of just how magnificent these gentle giants are.
If you're lucky enough to spot any marine wildlife while surfing or swimming at Muizenberg, always keep a respectful distance and never interfere. Report any unusual sightings to the Two Oceans Aquarium or NSRI.
